70′s TV Icon Has Little Time Left

64th Annual Tony Awards - Arrivals

“I don’t think of dying,” 73-year-old actress Valerie Harper tells People in their new issue. “I think of being here now.”

Sadly, that time is falling extremely short for the popular actress in the classic television series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show: the woman who made Mary’s BFF Rhoda Morgenstern come to life, announced that she’s battling terminal brain cancer and that doctors have given her about 3 months to live.

Harper, a lifelong nonsmoker who was previously diagnosed with lung cancer in March 2009, had been making the promotional rounds for her memoir, I, Rhoda, in January when she fell ill.

Harper’s character eventually was given a just-as-popular spin-off (entitled Rhoda) that lasted five seasons before being cancelled in 1978, but has appeared in many movies and television shows over the years including Sex and the City (her episode is actually one of my all-time favorites), The Simpsons and as of late, Drop Dead Diva.

May she hold onto the strength and positivity she exudes throughout this trying time.
