Better Than The Original: Day 1

GenieChristina

So, I figured I’d try something a little different here this week, TP readers!

Welcome to “Better Than The Original?”, a week of music posts from some of your favorite artists that shed light (and hopefully, good opinions) on different takes, samples and extra nods that you may not have known before regarding some of their biggest singles!

I’ll be doing this all this week with many different artists and versions!

Let’s start off  simple for the first entry:

The girl with the massive voice, Christina Aguilera, has had her share of great success (even though as of late, not so much — 2010′s Bionic and last year’s Lotus seem to be headed in the same down direction) and some awesome songs — but it all started officially with the release of 1999′s “Genie In A Bottle”, which brought the Mickey Mouse Club star to new heights and started her road to superstardom.

But I bet you didn’t realize that the sweet pop rendition of the track you all know and love wasn’t the true first take.

Rumor has it that another version; one with a completely different sound, was set to be released as the first single from her debut album. This version (eventually released and  labelled as the “Eddie Arroyo Rhythm Mix”) apparently didn’t fit the “pop” sound they wanted for the album and it was scrapped.

But there was one problem — the video had already been shot, so it was quickly re-edited with the “new” version that was eventually released (which also explains why if you look closely, the “main edit” really never syncs up the right way with the vocals).

Don’t believe me? Head on after the jump and check out both versions of the video — the “Eddie Arroyo” version was leaked a couple of years back and features more scenes not used in the “main” edit!
