Jon Stewart’s “Daily” Hiatus

64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Press Room

It’s a rarity to take some time off from your job — to take on another job.

But when it comes to The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, he’s doing just that.

The political comedian is taking off for 3 months this summer to direct his first film, Rosewater. The film is based off the memoir, Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival by Maziar Bahari, a journalist who spent 118 days in an Iranian prison after it was believed he was a spy.

And oddly enough, it was partially based on the fact that Bahari did an interview on The Daily Show.

While Stewart is a comedian by trade, the movie will not be a comedy. He told The New York Times that that the film came about due to his friendship with Bahari after his appearances on the show. “It just kind of happened,” he said.

John Oliver, a British comedian (and correspondent for the show), will fill in for 8 weeks of Jon’s time off.
