The Academy Awards? Not Anymore.

Well, this is an interesting development.

Everyone patiently awaiting the 85th Annual Academy Awards this coming Sunday won’t be seeing them.

They’ll be seeing The Oscars: as in, that is now the official name of the awards ceremony.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has decided to “re-brand” the annual awards show and have dropped “the 85th Annual Academy Awards” from it’s name.

So, it’s basically the same boring thing with a new name. Alright, we got it.

“We’re not calling it ‘the 85th annual Academy Awards,’ which keeps it mired somewhat in a musty way,” Oscar show co-producer Neil Meron said in an interview. “It’s called ‘The Oscars.’”

But it might just be for this year only — which makes it all the more strange.

“[It's just] right for this show”, revealed Oscars Academy spokeswoman Teni Melidonian. “But we could easily go back to using ‘Academy Awards’ next year.”

So the point exactly is….?

Anyway, along with Adele, some more performers were confirmed to hit the stage for cinema’s biggest night:

Jennifer Hudson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmaybe, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks and Helena Bonham Carter will honor movie musicals of the last decade Sunday in a live Broadway tribute.

The musical celebration will highlight Chicago, Dreamgirls and Les Misérables, and all the participating actors have starred in one of the big-screen adaptations.

Dame Shirley Bassey, Norah Jones and Barbara Streisand will appear as well.

The 85th Annual Academy Awards The Oscars will air this coming Sunday on ABC; 8 pm/7 c.
